Weird Kitties: Best Dramatic Presentation (Longform) Open Thread
Or, as I really do think of the category, “all the stuff that’s probably going to lose to Star Wars,” a film I would be shocked to find on my ballot given my dislike for both the franchise and the director. Call me cynical.
I’ll almost certainly be nominating Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road and, as the image suggests, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, in its entirety (as I think it’s better-suited to this category than short form, where one would have to pick an episode). I’ve kind of got a slot pencilled in for The Martian, but I also probably won’t actually get around to seeing it in theaters to make sure of this. (I’d love to hear opinions of it.)
Past that, I’m keeping my last slot open. The Force Awakens. Right now neither of the Marvel movies are making my list. I’m tempted to look at Daredevil, which I feel is better-suited due to the “all at once” release model of Netflix, but I’m also loathe to put too much television here. Jessica Jones is also a much more likely pick if I go that route. It Follows is also distinctly possible.
Also, as usual, more reviews for tomorrow are needed. I’ve got a couple of people who have suggested they might get me something, but nobody who has, so the cupboard may end up being bare, unless I get an Ex Machina review together or something, which I might do I suppose.

No disagreements with you on this (and yeah, I think The Martian will make the list and may even cause one of those minor upsets in the final results…)
My current dilemma is that I think that The Witcher 3 should be in this category, but I have no idea what the status of video games actually is within the nominating process. [Elsewhere I want to nominate Sunless Sea in one of the fiction categories because it’s not a “dramatic presentation” and it’s not a “related work” but it’s some of the best writing I’ve encountered. And I regret not putting 80 Days on my ballot last year but I had the same dilemma about where to put it.]

The Hugo Awards which are a set of awards given annually for the best science fantasy or fiction works and accomplishments of the previous year. I go with The Martian which is also science fiction novel written by Andy Weir. Although I am academic writer at Quality dissertation and providing most of the best dissertation service to students, I have also interested to read fiction novel and movies and as it’s his first novel and I think hi tried very well and written precisely.

Well written blog. The Martian” is the story of spaceman Mark Watney who becomes stranded on Mars when his team is forced to leave without him. The Hugo site (http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-categories/) suggests that computer games fit under either of the Dramatic Presentation categories (but with no guidance on how to measure the “length” of a game).
The Related Work category definition says “…either non-fiction or, if fictional, is noteworthy primarily for aspects other than the fictional text, and which is not eligible in any other category.” That probably means that games can’t go in there, so DP it is.
(And I still need to write up my list of 25 IF games that would be eligible for a new Best Videogame category.)
I see no reason why Inside Out shouldn’t be eligible under Long Dramatic Presentation.

Inside Out would be eligible, yes.
Video games are generally assumed to be eligible under Dramatic Presentation, but with no precedent for one ever actually being nominated one probably ought assume it’s an unproductive nomination. (As, of course, is Jonathan Strange.)
There’s been talk about a video games category, but it’s never gotten any momentum. (I personally support it, if only because it would hilariously infuriate the Puppies/Gators when Bioware’s massively popular and diversity-heavy RPGs win every year one is out.)
(Although I think a YA category is more important.)

In Japan, the 2001 Seiun Award for Best Dramatic Presentation went to a video game ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunparade_March ), but I suspect we’ll see an anime win a dramatic Hugo before a video game does. Most videogames that have stories at all have stories long enough to put them into the Long Form category, I suspect.

While it wasn’t to my tastes, I felt that Horse Money was an amazing ghost story (though my brother disagrees), and I’ve heard good things about Hard to Be a God (which my brother said he’ll supply a review for in the next coming weeks). Hopefully Crimson Peak will be as amazing as Pans Labyrinth so that could get a nomination. And yes, they will all lose to Star Wars (which I guarantee will be on the puppy short list. Because of course it will)

I’m not really in the loop for this – I don’t pay particular attention to the Hugos and the area of popular culture they cover – but I must say that Fury Road is the film of the year for me – compelling, haunting and fascinating but with lots of explosions. The black and white “silent” version that popped up for a moment a few weeks ago as good as the actual film. I’ve done a lot of thinking about it, too, largely alchemical (which I assume someone else has done, because it’s so obvious, but I’ve not seen it). I would even dare say that it’s the one film I’ve seen over the last few years that I think will still have a considerable reputation a few decades down the line.

The Martian and Inside Out would make my list as well. Star Wars may but I doubt it, Jessica Jones is more likely. Now I’m new to this Hugo’s thing so do you need to nominate 5 or is it up to 5?

Saw the Martian last Friday, because I am that much of a hard SF nerd. And, yeah – I had read the book. Grabbed it as a holiday read, and devoured it lying on a beach in no time flat.
And ultimately, I think that’s how the book is best approached. As a competently written, ploddingly phrased, technically very sound and realistic, space survival procedural. (Some spoilers follow, blah blah blah…)
The film? Well it’s elevated immensely by both Matt Damon’s performance, and Ridley Scott’s production and direction. It becomes immersive and engaging. Mars looks bloody gorgeous, and that’s a treat in itself. But ultimately I fear it suffers from the inherent flaw which the book labours under: It’s not actually about much. There are some semi interesting political elements, around the decision to mount rescue efforts, the resources involved, and the willingness of the public and the scientific community to pull together to rescue him.
Even more interesting is the moment when the Chinese Space Agency gets involved. But they get very little screen time, and the possibilities are examined so briefly (and only from the perspective of the head scientists in the CSA, deciding to make the offer to help themselves, without going through diplomatic channels, the ramifications of which are NOT entered into at all). It ends up being disappointingly trite.
So overall a lovely, thrilling, very sciencey, gorgeous to look at, engaging, piece of white bread.
